MANILA – The Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) was not of much help in getting to the bottom of the Dengvaxia vaccine controversy, according to former Health secretary Janette Garin.

The PAO led by Persida Acosta was just sowing panic among the public, Garin told a television morning show on Tuesday.

Nagugulo po ang imbestigasyon,” said Gari. “Instead of helping the government and the population, hysteria at panic ang nangyayari. Ang kawawa po rito taumbayan pa rin.”

In a Senate hearing on Wednesday last week, the PAO presented findings on the “link” between Dengvaxia and the death of 22 children inoculated with the dengue vaccine whose bodies its forensic personnel have autopsied.

But Health department officials insisted that the PAO’s findings were inconclusive and merely fueling public hysteria.

Garin claimed this creates a negative impression on other government vaccination programs.

Maraming hindi nagpapabakuna. Iyon ngang iba, hindi na nagpapapurga. Iyong pagpapakilo ng mga bata para sa ating nutrition program, ang dami na ring natatakot,” she said.

There remains to be “no conclusive findings” on the link between Dengvaxia and any death, Garin insisted.

Ang sabi ng World Health Organization noong Dec. 22, 2017, wala pang namamatay o wala mang severe shock or severe bleeding sa mga nabakunahan sa buong mundo,” she said.

Garin lamented that the PAO was determining the causality the wrong way.

Ang hirap ng ganitong sitwasyon na iyong trabaho ng DOH ay kinukuha at ginagawa ng ibang departamento,” she said.

She also slammed the PAO for doing something not within its mandate on its own.

Baka naman po pwedeng magkaisa ang gobyerno at lahat ng ahensya para naman po hindi nalilinlang iyong mga tao,” said Garin./PN
