HANDMADE ornaments are easy and fun to make. Try one of these DIY (do-it-yourself) crafts to hang on your tree or around your home this season.

Tinsel Snowflakes

Tinsel isn’t just for sprinkling on an evergreen tree. Try creating our sparkling ornaments to brighten any room.

Steps:

  1. Download snowflake-shape templates online and print to your desired sizes (ideally 5 to 12 inches in diameter).
  2. Tape to a piece of heavy mat board or smooth cardboard; place over a protective surface, such as a self-healing mat.
  3. Using a utility knife, cut through layers to create snowflake shape. Remove template. Using a medium paintbrush, coat one side of shape with craft glue. Sprinkle with fine glitter. Let glue dry; shake off excess glitter.
  4. Repeat, using glass-shard glitter. Repeat process on other side. Using silver thread, hang snowflakes from removable adhesive hooks.

Button Ornaments

The basic technique for all the ornaments is the same.

Steps:

  1. Bend a pipe cleaner in half and twist once at the top for a loop.
  2. Slide buttons over pipe cleaner ends, slipping one end into each hole (if the button has four holes, use two diagonal ones). Use larger buttons for bellies and hat brims.
  3. When finished, twist ends of pipe cleaner to secure, and trim.
  4. For reindeer legs and antlers and for Santa’s arms, bend 2-inch pieces of pipe cleaner in half, slip on between buttons, and twist.
  5. Glue on felt for Santa’s beard and the snowman’s nose.
  6. To hang the reindeer, loop a thread around its middle and tie.

 Sea Shell Ornaments

Dust shells with glitter to create a seashore-inspired tree.

Steps:

  1. Add stripes or dots to your sea shell: Working in sections, use a glue pen to create stripes or dots, and sprinkle with glitter; gently tap to remove excess, and let dry.
  2. For the jellyfish “tentacles,” use tinsel to form a 3- to 4-inch tassel: Cut strands of tinsel to length and tie the ends together with a 12-inch length of metallic cord, creating a hanging loop.
  3. Insert loop through center hole in shell so tassel hangs beneath the shell. Slip 1 pearl bead over loop, and secure with a dot of glue. (com)
