ILOILO City – Bacolod City-bound fast crafts from here were prevented from leaving following a gale warning from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) yesterday around 5 a.m.

Small fishermen were also advised not to set out to sea.

Iloilo City-bound fast crafts from Bacolod were cancelled, too, according to Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica of the Philippine Coast Guard-Iloilo.

But bigger roll on, roll off (ro-ro) vessels were allowed to leave ports, clarified Palabrica.

Pagasa’s gale warning covered Negros Occidental where Bacolod City is located, Samar, Aklan, Capiz, Isabela, eastern coast of Cagayan, Aurora, Camarines provinces, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Quezon including Polillo Island, Romblon, Masbate and Burias Island.

“Iloilo was not covered by the gale warning but the destination (Bacolod City) of fast crafts from here was,” said Palabrica. “The waves were bigger, the winds stronger.”

Affected fast craft passengers had the option of taking Bacolod City-bound ro-ro vessels at the port in Lapuz, this city or the port in Dumangas, Iloilo, said Palabrica.

Trips of small passenger boats in northern Iloilo, specifically those below 200 gross tonnage, were also affected by the cancellation. It covered boat trips from Ajuy, Iloilo bound for Victorias City, Negros Occidental and Estancia, Iloilo bound for Masbate island province.

Boat trips from Iloilo to Guimaras and vice versa, however, were allowed to go on.

In an interview yesterday morning after the coastguard announced the cancellation of fast crafts’ Bacolod trips, Palabrica said these would resume once Pagasa lifted its gale warning./PN
