MANILA – GlobalPort Batang Pier finally tasted a victory in the 2017-2018 PBA Philippine Cup following a 78-70 victory over Rain or Shine Elasto Painters last night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Stanley Pringle led the way with 29 points and nine rebounds.

Kelly Nabong had double-double 12 points and 13 rebounds while Bradwyn Guinto contributed 10 points for the Batang Pier, which tied the Painters with 1-2 win-loss slate.

Sean Anthony, who struggled with only three points on 1-of-11 shooting, contributed on other departments with 13 rebounds, 12 assists and four steals.

Batang Pier missed the services of injured Terrence Romeo and Arnold Van Opstal but had a strong start for a 13-2 lead on hits by Nabong, Pringle and Julian Sargent.

The lead even went up to 19-5 before the Painters answered with a run to come to within 18-19.

Batang Pier pulled away anew at the onset of the second frame at 28-21 on a basket by Jonathan Grey but the Painters countered with a run to snatch the lead at 33-30. Consecutive hits by Pringle, however, gave the Batang Pier a 41-35 halftime lead.

Batang Pier had another surge early in the third quarter for a 52-42 lead on a trey by Nabong. The Painters was able to pull to within 51-54 but back-to-back inside hits by rookie Joseph Gabayni increased Batang Pier’s lead to 58-51.

The Painters was able to come close for the last time at 61-62 before Batang Pier unloaded a huge run behind Pringle, Sargent and Guinto to increase the advantage to 70-62 with over a minute left in the match.

“The players talaga wanted it today. It’s a team effort,” said Batang Pier head coach Pido Jarencio. “We hit our target. ‘Yung 80 points or below. We also played good defense the entire game.”

Gabe Norwood led the way with 15 points while Mark Borboran and Maverick Ahanmisi had 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Painters which missed key players Jericho Cruz, Anthony Washington, Chris Tiu, and Jireh Ibanes.
