MANILA – All Philippine troops fighting the Islamic State-linked Maute group in Marawi City were assured of government assistance.

President Rodrigo Duterte promised to provide aid to all wounded soldiers and the bereaved families of the slain ones.

“The nation will never neglect the heroes of our republic,” Duterte said late Monday night as he recognized the military’s “relentless effort and determination” to regain full control of the Lanao del Sur capital.

The President called on the military to remain resolved to win the war against the Maute.

“I enjoin the operating troops to carry on until our objective of wiping out these enemies of the state and the people has been achieved,” Duterte said.

“The people of Marawi will also need your assistance as they rebuild their lives and homes once our military operations come to a conclusion,” he added.

Around 84 soldiers have been killed in the ongoing battle, according to Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella. Maute terrorists who perished in the strikes have reached 336.

Also on Monday, Duterte issued Administrative Order No. 3 creating Task Force Bangon Marawi, which was tasked to lead “recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation” efforts in Marawi and other areas affected by the conflict.

Task Force Bangon Marawi shall “organize and deploy quick response team, conduct a post-conflict needs assessment, facilitate and oversee the construction of shelters for displaced persons, coordinate the immediate restoration of public utilities, attend to the basic needs of affected residents, provide an environment conducive to business and livelihood activities, and ensure restoration of peace and order.”

It shall also “ensure that these efforts will provide the springboard for a safer and peaceful Marawi and act as catalyst for developments in Mindanao,” the order stated./PN
