AGRICULTURE secretary Manny Piñol turned over on Aug. 23 the P3 million-worth of Community Fish Landing Center (CFLC) in Brgy. Sebario, San Lorenzo, Guimaras.

“We make sure that the fisherfolk obtain fair share of interventions from the government,” stressed Piñol.

Under the Targeted Actions to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation Program, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) constructs CFLCs to reduce poverty incidence in coastal communities.

BFAR, as an attached bureau of the Department of Agriculture (DA), will also provide postharvest facilities and equipment to reduce losses and to spur fishery development.

Rep. Lucille Nava expressed her gratitude to DA and BFAR for the support considering that 51 out of 98 barangays in Guimaras are coastal areas.

“Fishery is part and parcel of our agri-ecotourism development. Through these projects, we will prove that Guimaras can sustain its tourism industry,” said Nava.

The CFLC will serve as a one-stop hub for fish trading and economic activities such as skills training and community organizing. This facility will benefit more than 75 fisherfolk in San Lorenzo.

On the other hand, Piñol also turned over 250 units of 20-footer fiberglass fishing boats worth P15 million to the five municipalities of Guimaras. He explained that two households will share in one fishing boat to ensure their livelihood sustainability.

“Soon, we will also provide P5 million fund and a multi-purpose dryer worth P10 million to seaweed growers of Guimaras,” added Piñol./PN
