ILOILO City – Celebrating the happiest time of the year, Mayor Jose Espinosa III and barangay captains led the switch-on ceremony of the first Iloilo City Giant Lantern Festival along Muelle Loney Street, City Proper on Dec. 11.

“We want to showcase the beauty of Iloilo River at night. Making parols during Christmas is a tradition for Filipinos for it symbolizes hope in every challenge that we encounter. This is for all of you, and for your family to enjoy and feel the spirit of Christ’s birth,” said Espinosa.

This year’s theme, “Viva Parol: Kasanag kag Duag sang Paskwa” showcases 37 competing lanterns or parol made of indigenous and recycled materials with traditional or modernized design.

The first place winner will receive P50,000; second place – P40,000; third place – P30,000; and P5,000 each will be given as consolation prizes to seven entries.

Judging will be based on the following:

* originality or uniqueness – 40 percent

* creativity or lighting and design – 40 percent

* workmanship or utilization of recycled and indigenous materials – 20 percent

The awarding will be during the city hall Christmas party at Plaza Libertad today. The party starts at 4 p.m.

Espinosa said the event is not only a time to promote camaraderie among city hall employees but to also celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ and give thanks to the blessings received the whole year.

“We hope that you will enjoy this event with your fellow city government employees and at the same time celebrate the spirit of Christmas,” said Espinosa.

City departments and offices were grouped into eight clusters with corresponding color-code which they will be required to wear.

Espinosa said there will also be a cash raffle. (Iloilo City PIO)/PN
