KALIBO, Aklan – Construction work for a hanging bridge that will connect Barangay Bakhaw Norte and mainland Kalibo is ongoing.

Bakhaw Norte residents – 2,336 as of the 2016 Census – and anyone going to and from the island barangay won’t have to cross the Aklan River on board boats or rafts once the hanging bridge is completed.

Right now “residents, students and farmers cross the Aklan River via banca and bamboo rafts (baesa) or by foot to reach the opposite riverbank,” said Municipal Engineer Emerson Lachica.

According to Lachica, the hanging bridge will help those going to and from the barangay most especially during heavy rains, which raise the river level and make crossing it even more difficult.

A priority project of the local government, the P32-million, 160-lineal meter bridge will connect Bakhaw Norte to Barangay Bakhaw Sur in the mainland.

The contractor started clearing the project site on Monday to give way to Phase I of the project, Lachica said.

Phase I is funded with P16.885 million under the Assistance for Disadvantaged Municipalities (formerly Bottom-Up Budgeting Program) under the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

Phase II, on the other hand, costs more than P15 million. The allocation comes from the municipal government, Lachica said.
