MANILA – Vice President Leni Robredo on Wednesday said she welcomes the reopening of Senate inquiry on extrajudicial killings, after retired policeman Arturo Lascañas reversed his statement over the infamous Davao Death Squad (DDS).

Robredo, who is vocal in her opposition to the spate of drug-related killings recently, said the investigation is the avenue to vet Lascañas’ confession.

Natutuwa ako kasi the Senate voted to hear it. Tingin ko makakatulong sa pag-assess natin ng kaniyang credibility, ng credibility ng kaniyang kuwento kapag binigyan na tayo ng mas maraming pagkakataon to assess it,” Robredo told House reporters.

Months after denying the existence of the DDS, Lascañas owned up to his participation in it, even claiming that President Rodrigo Duterte paid them up to P100,000 to kill targets back when he was mayor of Davao City.

The Senate is set to reopen its probe about the vigilante group, after voting on the matter in a caucus. Ten senators voted in favor of this move, while eight opposed and five were reported to have abstained.

[A]ng imbestigasyon kasi sa Senado, mabibigyan tayo ng pagkakataon na ma-observe ang kaniyang – hindi lang ang kaniyang demeanor, pero ang kaniyang statements,” Robredo said.

Asked if Lascañas’ turn-around may be used as grounds to file an impeachment complaint against Duterte, Robredo replied: “Depende kasi ‘yon sa sasabihin niya.”

“[H]indi pa naman nag-uumpisa ang investigation. I think masasabi natin kung puwede siyang maging basis or not kung ongoing na ang investigation,” she added.  (GMA News)
