KALIBO, Aklan – Councilor Juris Bautista-Sucro urged locals to use bicycles as a major means of transportation in this capital town.

Bautista-Sucro, who chairs the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) committee of transport, said using bicycles does not only promote health but also good for the environment.

According to a 2017 study conducted by investigators at the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom, cycling to work is associated with “very large health benefits.”

Commuters who cycle to work have a 41 percent lower risk of dying from all causes than people who drive or take other means of public transport, the study revealed.

The study further showed that there is 46 percent lower risk of developing and 52 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases, and 45 percent lower risk of developing and 40 percent lower risk of dying from cancer.

There are 16 barangays in Kalibo. These barangays have two-lane roads.

Bautista-Sucro said the SB passed a resolution requesting the Municipal Engineering Office and the Department of Public Works and Highways to conduct a feasibility study on putting up bike lanes in these roads.

“If many could use bicycles as a primary mode of transport, we can minimize air pollution here in Aklan’s capital town,” said Bautista-Sucro.

Kalibo is the home of Ati-Atihan Festival, which is considered the “Mother of all Philippine Festivals.”/PN
