MANILA – Ceres-Negros got back on the winning track in the 2017 Philippines Football League after a 3-1 victory over Kaya-Makati at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

Bienvenido Marañon scored a hat-trick to lead the way for Ceres, which now has a total of 7 seven points on two wins, one draw and a loss. Kaya, meanwhile, dropped to fourth place with 10 points.

From a slow start Saturday night, Ceres entered the scoring column before the halftime break on a header by Marañon. Kaya quickly responded after the break on a conversion by Robert Lopez Mendy.

Ceres regained the lead 2-1 following a penalty kick by Marañon. After a missed opportunity for Kaya to tie the count at 2-2, Ceres stretched the lead 3-1 on a curling shot by Marañon.

Meanwhile Meralco-Manila Sparks suffered its second consecutive draw after Stallion-Laguna forced their match at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium to end up with 1-1.

Meralco went ahead early following a conversion by Phil Younghusband from the penalty area. Ilonggo Jesus Melliza countered with an inside hit for Stallion to tie the count.

Ginawa lang namin iyong mga dapat namin gawin — what we trained for, we should apply on the field,” said Stallion assistant coach Richard Leyble.

Despite the deadlock, Meralco remained on top of the standings with 17 points, on five wins and two draws, while Stallion had 3 points on three draws and three losses./PN
