ILOILO City – A dead 50-year-old man was fished out of the Iloilo River yesterday morning.

Did he jump to his death or did he accidentally fall into the river? Was he murdered?

Alexander Diaste was a resident of Barangay Legaspi dela Rama, City Proper. Around 9:30 a.m., his body was retrieved from the Iloilo River by divers of the Philippine Coast Guard – Iloilo.

Diaste’s family sought the coastguard’s help after an hour of futile search that started 7 a.m.

According to Diaste’s wife Lucrecia, 53, her husband was no longer in their house when she woke up.

She looked for him but found only her husband’s slippers floating between two docked boats, FB Blackfin and FB Mackerel. She got nervous.

“Around 8:12 a.m. coastguards launched a search and rescue operation,” said Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica.

After over an hour of search, Diaste’s body was spotted some 20 meters away from where his slippers were found.

A crew of FB Blackfin, Melchor Laroca, told the coastguards he saw a man sitting at the edge of the pier early morning yesterday.

He did not mind the man, he said. He wasn’t also sure if that man was Diaste.

“The family initially sought the help of their barangay council and neighbors in looking for Diaste. The wife feared her husband went swimming and drowned, or may have passed out and fell into the river,” said Palabrica.

Diaste’s body was taken to the West Visayas State University Medical Center, Jaro district for an autopsy./PN
