MANILA – National University Bulldogs turned to Rodolfo Alejandro in the endgame to score a come-from-behind 87-84 win over Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball yesterday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Trailing 64-79 early in the fourth quarter, Bulldogs went on a huge run behind Issa Gaye, Jonas Tibayan and Rafael Mosqueda to come to within 79-81.

Alejandro made a triple and a 2-pointer for Bulldogs to surge 84-81 before Gaye extended the lead 86-81 with two free throws. Tamaraws came to within 84-86 on a triple by Ron Dennison but failed to convert since then.

Gaye finished with double-double 24 points and 11 rebounds, Alejandro chipped in with 17 markers – 11 coming in the final quarter – while rookie Antonio Joson had 13 points for Bulldogs.

The victory allowed Bulldogs to snap its two-game losing skid and keep its slim Final Four hopes alive with a 5-8 win-loss card. NU will close out the double elimination against University of the Philippines Maroons on Saturday.

“It was a total team effort,” said Bulldogs head coach Michael Jay Jarin. “This is a dream for me. I saw the maturity of the players despite being down (in the fourth). We are hoping for another win on Saturday to keep our Final Four hopes alive.”

Dennison and Arvin Tolentino finished with 21 points apiece while Wendelino Comboy and Hubert Cani had 16 and 14 points, respectively, for Tamaraws, which dropped to 6-7./PN
