BACOLOD City – In a desperate bid to evade arrest, a suspected thief tried to commit suicide in a pharmacy on San Juan Street, Barangay 12.

Finding difficulty escaping, the 42-year-old Jonathan Manero, a resident of Barangay Mambulac, Silay City, Negros Occidental, attempted to hang himself using an electric fan cord, investigation showed.

He also drank some of the antibiotics he allegedly stole from Generics Pharmacy, said Senior Inspector Eugene Tolentino, Police Station 1 commander.

Manero entered the pharmacy by destroying the roof and ceiling around 4 a.m. yesterday, triggering the security alarm and prompting Police Station 1 officers to rush to the establishment.

Police officers found him unconscious. They then called medical rescuers.

Manero was arrested and detained in the Police Station 1 lockup cell upon waking up.

Medicines worth P2,710 and P1,443 cash were recovered from him./PN
