ILOILO – A total of 6,000 tree seedlings of various species will be planted today as the provincial government celebrates its 18th Piesta sa Kakahuyan.
According to Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office chief Mitch Peñaflorida, kamagong, jackfruit, narra, kamunsil, and bignay trees will be planted along the riverbanks of barangays Bongol and Balanac in Janiuay town.
An estimated 1,000 participants from the provincial capitol and various government agencies will be joining the tree planting activity, said Peñaflorida.
Meanwhile, this year the provincial government’s Action for Re-greening and Transformation for Climate Change Adaptation –a reforestation program – will focus on the planting cacao and coffee in a bid to strengthen the province’s cacao and coffee growing industry.
“Priority and thrust ta ma-shift from endemic trees to cacao and coffee,” said Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr.
For this, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan approved a P10-million budget.
“We will utilize this to procure cacao and coffee seedlings. The province of Iloilo is embarking on a province-wide cacao and coffee planting,” said Defensor.
The scheme for the planting, distribution and allocation of the seedlings is being finalized.
“We have identified areas all over the province suited for cacao and coffee,” said Defensor./PN
