MANILA – Filipino boxer Arnel Baconaje captured the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) super bantamweight belt with a unanimous decision win over Brian Lobetania on Sunday at the San Fernando City Town Plaza in San Fernando, La Union.

This marks the first professional boxing title of the San Rafael, Iloilo-native Baconaje, who has tallied his third straight victory since losing to veteran boxer Ernesto Saulong last year.

The 23-year-old Baconaje was unsuccessful in his first try for a professional boxing title following a unanimous decision defeat to Filipino Warren Mambuanag for the Philippine Games and Amusements Board super featherweight diadem.

Masaya ako at nakapag uwi na ako ng title belt kasi matagal ko ring pinangarap ito, nabigo man ako sa mga nauna kong title fight at least nakuha ko na rin sa pang pitong try,” said Baconaje.

Baconaje imposed his presence early on by throwing numerous combinations, including a stinging right straight that wobbled the much-experienced Lobetania in the middle of the match.

Baconaje continued to punish Lobetania with his quick attacks in the following rounds enough to convince the three boxing judges to award the lopsided decision to the Ilonggo boxer.

With the win, Baconaje increased his boxing slate to 8-2-0, with six wins coming by way of knockouts, while the Cebuano Lobetania’s boxing record went down to 11-3-3, including nine stoppage victories./PN
