ILOILO City – Three sachets of shabu were recovered from a suspected leader of a youth gang.
John Francis Estember of Barangay Pala-pala, City Proper was busted around 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 14 at the Iloilo Terminal Market.
Estember was the suspected leader of Sperm gang, police said.
The P500 marked money that an undercover police officer used to buy shabu from the suspect was also recovered.
Estember was detained at Police Station 1. He worked as a lumpia wrapper maker at the Iloilo Terminal Market.
Estember faces a charge for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 that outlaws the possession or trade of dangerous drugs.
Sperm gang was one of at least 25 youth gangs the Iloilo City Police Office identified.
Gang-related violence has been bugging the city in recent months. The ICPO said most of the members of the gangs were minors.
The city police feared gang violence could erupt during the Dinagyang festivities.
The gangs that the ICPO identified were spread out in five districts – City Proper, La Paz and Lapuz, Mandurriao, Molo.
Senior Inspector Marie Faith Superio of ICPO’s Women and Children’s Protection Desk said the singular focus of the police in the campaign against illegal drugs may have contributed to the growth of youth gangs because these were not given much attention./PN
