MANILA – Jenel Lausa failed to overcome the much hungrier Eric Shelton and succumbed to a unanimous-decision defeat in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fight Night 121 yesterday at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia.

It was the second consecutive defeat for the Concepcion, Iloilo native since winning his UFC debut against Chinese MMA veteran Yao Zhikui a year ago, also in Australia.

“Every defeat we suffer in life is an opportunity to learn,” Lausa said in a statement sent to Panay News. “I will use this opportunity to be a better fighter and a better representative of this country.”

Lausa went aggressive early with a takedown on Shelton (not Sheldon, as earlier reported) when he intercepted the latter’s looping but the American came back with a double-leg takedown and landed good ground-and-pound.

Shelton scored another takedown early in the second round and attempted a choke but Lausa stripped it away and stood up. Then Shelton floored the Filipino anew and stayed on top with punches and elbows.

In the third round, the American was still the aggressor, going for a big leg kick. Lausa tried an uppercut but Shelton countered with a counter-right. Shelton picked up another takedown and kept Lausa at bay.

“It feels amazing to get the first win of my UFC career,” Shelton said.

“I had a couple of close fights before this, so I knew I had to prove myself,” he added. “My coaches and I knew we had to dominate, whether we were on the mat or standing, so I just kept my pace.”

With his first UFC victory, Shelton snapped his three-match losing skid and improved his win-loss record to 11-4. Lausa, meanwhile, dropped to 7-4 (1-2 with UFC)./PN
