KALIBO, Aklan – Coastal waters in Western Visayas are now free from toxic red tides.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) lifted the ban on coastal waters of Gigantes Islands in Carles, Iloilo.

Coastal waters of Altavas, Batan and New Washington in Batan Bay in Aklan; Mambuquiao and Camanci in Batan, Aklan; Pilar, Panay, President Roxas, and Roxas City in Capiz; and Sapian Bay (Ivisan and Sapian in Capiz) continue to be free from toxic red tide, the BFAR said in Shellfish Bulletin No. 12 on April 4.

Also free from toxic red tide are the coastal waters of EB Magalona, Pontevedra, Pulupandan, Valladolid, Hinigaran, Binalbagan, and San Enrique towns, and Talisay, Silay, Bacolod, Cadiz, Victorias, and Bago cities in Negros Occidental.

But shellfish collected from Daram Island in Western Samar; Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol; and Milagros in Masbate are still positive for paralytic shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit, the BFAR said.

Fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
