MANILA – Former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained at The Hague in the Netherlands due to an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity, is back as Davao City’s Mayor.
The former Chief Executive easily defeated his former spokesperson Karlo Alexei Nograles, t he partial and unofficial tally of votes from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) showed.
Duterte, who was arrested on March 11 after arriving in the country from Hong Kong and was quickly flown to The Hague, will appear for the ICC confirmation of charges on September 23.
He made his first appearance before the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber 1 on March 14 for the verification of his identity and was informed of the charges against him and of his rights under the ICC Rome Statute.
The Comelec previously said should Duterte win in the polls, he would be proclaimed in absentia and has to take his oath before noon time of June 30 or the winning Vice Mayor with take over his post.
Incumbent Davao City mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte emerged victorious in the vice mayoralty race, defeating Nograles’ running mate Bernie Al-ag and independent bets Oyie Soriano-Barcena and Marcos Alceber.
Cong. Paolo Duterte, on the other hand, has been reelected as Davao’s first district representative by defeating Migs Nograles, while his sons Omar Duterte and Rodrigo “Rigo” Duterte II won as second district representative and as Davao City Sangguniang Panlungsod member, respectively.
