BORACAY – Will this world-famous island reach its 2-million target tourist arrivals before the year ends?
“From January to November this year, we already registered 1,828,000 tourist arrivals,” said Niven Maquirang, the administrator of the Caticlan jetty port.
The visits this year are higher compared to last year’s 1.7 million and is the highest ever recorded, Maquirang said.
Maquirang attributed the increasing number of visits to the port calls made by cruise ships in the island resort.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) recorded 12 cruises that made port calls in the island with over 30,000 passengers and crew members from January to November this year.
The DOT added that one out of four cruises scheduled this December already docked in the island on Dec. 5. The other three are scheduled on Dec. 13, 25 and 29.
Maquirang said the recognitions given to Boracay – like being the best island in the world in 2016 according to the international lifestyle and luxury magazine Condé Nast Traveler – are also factors contributing to the increase in the number of visits.
“We are still monitoring the figures if we could indeed reach two-million tourist visits this year,” Maquirang said. “If we reach the desired target, we could then study how many tourists we desire for 2018.”/PN
