ILOILO – A total of 13,194,618 seedlings of different tree species will be planted in various areas in Western Visayas within 12 years.

The expanded National Greening Program (eNGP) in the region from 2017 to 2028 aims to cover 11,815 hectares, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

An initial funding of more than P300 million is seen to sustain the next phase of the reforestation program.

Executive Order No. 193 expands the NGP coverage to include “all remaining unproductive, denuded and degraded forestlands.”

Through the eNGP, the DENR wants to not only “attain climate resiliency or ecological balance” but also “see the improvement of the lives of our people in the uplands and coastal areas,” Regional Director Jim O Sampulna said in a press release.

Seedling production, site preparation and planting, and first-year maintenance and protection make up activities in this year’s eNGP.

Beneficiaries of the 2015 and 2016 NGP sites will continue maintaining and protecting their respective sites.

In 2016, a total of 15,225,032 seedlings were planted in 8,977 hectares areas in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo.

Various people’s organizations, with contribution from state universities and colleges, raised the seedlings from January to June. (With DENR Region 6/PN)
