17-year-old lad drowns at Negros old pier

BACOLOD City – Swimming turned fatal for a boy in a coastal village in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

The 17-year-old Ruel Dave Cumahig of Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental drowned at the old pier in Barangay Cartagena around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, a police report showed.

Cumahig went swimming at the sea with a friend who the police did not identify at the time.

The friend tried to rescue Cumahig after the latter was drawn by strong waves but failed.

Rescuers fished Cumahig out of the water and brought him to the Sipalay City Health Unit where attending physician Dr. Roberto Ledez pronounced him “dead on arrival.”

Homicide try suspect arrested

Charged with attempted homicide, a man was arrested in Hacienda San Pablo, Barangay Banquerohan, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, police said.

The 37-year-old resident Jose Jayme was caught around 11:55 a.m. on Aug. 3 on the strength of an arrest warrant that Judge Joanne Frances Nifras of the Municipal Trial Court in Cadiz City issued on Aug. 1.

Officers from the Cadiz City police station staged the arrest.

Jayme was detained at the police station’s lockup facility.

The court recommended a P12,000 bail bond for his temporary liberty.

Murcia local yields ‘shabu’

Three sachets of suspected shabu were recovered from a man in Barangay 16, a police report showed.

The 24-year-old Murcia, Negros Occidental resident Regie Cruz was arrested around 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, the report added.

Cruz was detained at the Police Station 1 lockup facility.

Charges for violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, will be filed against him.

Laborer found dead in Bago

He was found dead in Purok Maisnuswagon, Barangay Atipuluan, Bago City, Negros Occidental, police said.

The 40-year-old laborer Juvy Canete of Barangay Bunga, Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental was pronounced “dead on arrival” at the Bago City Hospital around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Canete was discovered unconscious inside a tower in Little Charles Farm owned by Henry Yap around 1:17 a.m. on the same day, according to the police.

Canete was believed to have died due cardiac arrest. Police said his body bore no signs of foul play. (With Cyrus Garde/PN)
