BACOLOD City – Eighteen weighing scales at the Libertad Market found to have been tampered with were confiscated.
An item’s weight as what appears on the seized scales is 150 to 250 grams more than its actual weight, the City Treasurer’s Office (CTO) said.
Most of the tampered weighing scales were owned by ambulant fruit vendors.
The seizure was a result of the CTO’s massive weighing scale calibration from Sept. 13 and 14.
A total of 155 weighing scales were calibrated. The CTO collected P48,305 in fees for calibration and sealing.
Inspections and calibration will also be held in other markets.
The city government is strictly complying with The Consumer Act of the Philippines, said Executive Assistant Ernie Pineda, cluster head on markets.
He said City Ordinance No. 565 also provides that weight equipment used by businesses must be licensed and sealed with corresponding fees.
Consumers may report to “welfare desks” at Libertad Market (at the gate along Hernaez Street), Burgos Market (along Hilado Street) and Central Market (center isle) if they have concerns, particularly on weighing scales, said Pineda./PN
