ILOILO City – Two farmers were arrested on Monday, April 20, for illegal possession of a homemade firearm and violation of forestry laws during an operation in Barangay Inyawan, Libertad, Antique.
The suspects, identified as 60-year-old alias “Rogelio” and 26-year-old alias “Rogen,” both residents of the area, were taken into custody at the Libertad Municipal Police Station (MPS).
Personnel from the Libertad MPS and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office carried out the arrest at 2:30 p.m. after the suspects were caught cutting and burning assorted trees for charcoal.
During the apprehension, Rogen reportedly resisted and drew a weapon. He was immediately subdued, and police recovered a caliber .357 revolver without a serial number, loaded with five rounds of live ammunition.
Both men face charges for violating forestry laws, while an additional criminal case for violation of Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) will be filed against Rogen.
Brigadier General Josefino Ligan, director of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6), emphasized the importance of environmental protection and strict law enforcement.
“We will not tolerate any form of environmental destruction or illegal possession of firearms,” Ligan said. “This successful operation highlights our firm commitment to safeguarding our natural resources and ensuring public safety.
