ILOILO City – Two congressmen from Iloilo province were named as members of the powerful Commission on Appointments (CA) – Raul Tupas of the 5th District and Ferjenel Biron of the 4th District.

The CA is a constitutional body which confirms or rejects certain political appointments made by the President of the Philippines.

The 25-member Commission consists of the President of the Senate as ex officio chairman; 12 senators, and 12 members of the House of Representatives, elected by each House on the basis of proportional representation from the political parties and parties of organizations registered under the party-list system represented therein.

However, the appointment to the CA will be term-sharing.

Biron together with Caloocan congressman Oscar Malapitan will serve the first half of the 36-month term while Tupas and Batangas’ Cong. Marvey Mariño will serve the second half of the term in the CA.

While waiting for his turn, Tupas will chair the National Defense and Security Committee in the House.

Meantime, Iloilo City Lone District congresswoman Julienne Baronda, Iloilo 3rd District congressman Lorenz Defensor, and Iloilo 1st District congresswoman Janette Garin were named Deputy Majority Leaders./PN
