ILOILO City – The island province of Guimaras will host the International Forum on Coastal Management under the Partnership in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia Network of Local Government (PNLG).
Gov. Samuel Gumarin accepted the PNLG flag recently at Sanya Visun Yacht Hotel in Hainan province, China as a symbol of acceptance for the hosting of the 2018 PNLG.
Guimaras has an integrated coastal management program for sustainable development covering the preservation, conservation and restoration of the island’s ecosystem from the hills to the sea.
The island province’s coastal and marine areas are significant sources of livelihood – from small-scale fishing to tourism.
New elements have been incorporated to enhance the provincial development plan of Guimaras, considering eco-tourism as one of its potentials.
Some of the success indicators are developed agroforestry, integrated farming systems and agri-aqua sites, revived traditional livelihood practices, protected watershed, wildlife areas and endangered species, and, managed unique, geologic, ecological, archaeological and historical sites, among others.
