MANILA – Vincent “Chot” Reyes will reveal the other half of the 24-man Gilas Pilipinas men’s basketball team set to banner the country in various international tournaments this year.
Reyes will be naming the 12 PBA veterans to be loaned by PBA teams before the second game of the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup tonight at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Already part of the Gilas lineup are cadets Mac Belo, Matthew Wright, Kevin Ferrer, Russel Escoto, Jiovani Jalalon, Arnold Van Opstal, Roger Pogoy, Eduardo Daquioag, Mike Tolomia, Carl Bryan Cruz, Von Pessumal, and Alfonso Gotladera.
A source disclosed to Panay News the players that Reyes plans to borrow from each PBA squad but since the list was given a few weeks ago, some of the players may have changed.
Those who will be in Gilas are June Mar Fajardo of the San Miguel Beermen, Gabe Norwood of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Terrence Romeo of the GlobalPort Batang Pier, Calvin Abueva of the Alaska Aces, Paul Lee of the Star Hotshots, and Japeth Aguilar of the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings.
Also in Chot’s shortlist are Jayson Castro of the TNT Katropa, JC Intal of the Phoenix Fuel Masters, Bradwyn Guinto of the NLEX Road Warriors, Arthur Dela Cruz of the Blackwater Elite, Jonathan Grey of the Meralco Bolts and Joseph Eriobu of the Mahindra Floodbuster.
Aside from the Castro, Katropa reportedly has also made its other players available for the national men’s basketball team, namely Jeth Troy Rosario, Matthew Ganuelas-Rosser and Ranidel de Ocampo.
“We are allowed to pick one PBA player from each team plus the 12 Gilas players and the naturalized player. From that lineup, we will pick the 12 players that will play in each tournament,” Reyes said.
“There are no hard and fast rules on the composition of the 12. It will depend on the kind of the tournament, competition and on the condition of the players,” the returning Gilas mentor added.
As part of the agreement between the PBA and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Gilas players will be pulled out two months before a competition, while PBA veterans will be loaned 15 days before a tournament.
Reyes said 2017 will be a busy year for the Gilas team as they will compete in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) tournament, the FIBA-Asia Championship, Jones Cup, SEA Games and the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifier./PN
