ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. thanked the government of the Republic of Korea for the implementation of the Iloilo Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA) Health System Strengthening Project.
The project included the construction of the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (CEmONC) facilities and provision of equipment to three district hospitals – Aleosan District Hospital in Alimodian, Dr. Ricardo S. Provido Memorial District Hospital in Calinog, and Jesus M. Colmenares Memorial District Hospital in Balasan.
The ceremonial turnover of the newly-completed CEmONC facilities were held on Sept. 27 at Aleosan District Hospital with Korean Ambassador Kim Jae Shin and other Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) officials as guests.
“This project could greatly improve health services for our people,” Defensor said.
Iloilo GIDA Health System Project is a grant from KOICA and the Republic of Korea in the amount of US$7 million (approximately P300 million). It primarily aims to strengthen the maternal and child health service delivery system of the three recipient district hospitals and the Rural Health Units (RHUs) of nine municipalities, namely, Alimodian, Leon, San Miguel, Calinog, Bingawan, Balasan, Batad, Estancia and Carles.
The project’s implementation started in 2014.
Aside from the construction of CEmONC facilities and provision of equipment, a number of health personnel were also sent to Korea to undergo training and capacity building.
The project augmented the bed capacities of Aleosan District Hospital with 40 beds, JCMDH with 48 beds and DRSPMDH with 32 beds.
KOICA also provided hospital apparatus and equipment to the three hospitals, such as, X-ray machines, ultrasound machines, hospital beds, laboratory equipment and generator sets.
Ambassador Shin acknowledged the strong commitment of Defensor to the “partnership” between Iloilo province and the Korean government.
He also cited the governor’s thrust in making basic medical services accessible to the general public.
Defensor noted that his administration already invested around P1 billion pesos for the upgrading of the 12 provincial government-run hospitals since 2010.
“My obsession is to transform all our district hospitals into real hospitals for the poor, and I believe we are already there,” Defensor averred.
Also present in the turnover ceremony were Assistant Secretary Leonita Gorgolon of the Department of Health, Provincial Administrator Raul Banias and mayors Geefre Alonsabe of Alimodian, Marina Gorriceta of San Miguel, Rolito Cajilig of Leon, and Manuel Ganzon of Balasan.
