BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental residents were urged to report dog bite cases right away. Three more dogs tested positive for rabies this month, said the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO).
The persons they have bitten were treated with post-exposure vaccination, said Dr. Ryan Janoya, head of the PVO Animal Health and Meat Inspection Division.
“We are reminding the patients to immediately report to their respective animal bite centers for necessary medication,” he stressed.
The three latest rabies cases were detected in Barangay Isio, Cauayan; Barangay Zone 1, Talisay City; and Barangay Bocana, Ilog.
Janoya said the head samples of the infected dogs were subjected to laboratory tests.
After confirmatory tests, the PVO coordinated with the concerned local governments, sent personnel, and activated paravets to perform quick-response/blanket vaccination within a 3-kilometer radius.
The blanket vaccination is performed on other dogs hoped to be still free from the rabies virus.
From January to September, the PVO recorded 10 positive canine rabies cases.
The dogs were from barangays Poblacion, Sipalay City; Ma-ao and Poblacion, Bago City; Damgo and Alicante, EB Magalona; Canroma, Pontevedra; Salvacion, Murcia; Zone 10, Talisay City; and Bulad and Cabcab, Isabela.
One fatality caused by rabies has been confirmed in Sagay City, PVO records showed.
“We are urging residents to always practice responsible pet ownership, which includes leashing their dogs properly to prevent them from harming other people,” Janoya said. (PNA)
