The 4th World Chess Championship for People with Disabilities started over the weekend at the Tornelo online playing platform with 249 players from 46 countries, including the Philippines, competing for top honors. The event is a 9-round Swiss competition with 45 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
After 4 rounds of play, six players with perfect scores are leading the pack. They are FMs Stanislav Babarykin and Ilia Lipilin of Russia, Mohammed Aayan Ismail of England, Harlen jose Otero Munatelo of Venezuela, Leonel Amato of Argentina, and Aleksander Choroszej of Poland. Each has 4 points. Half-a-point behind them at 3½ points apiece is a 16-player logjam that includes Filipino FM Sander Severino of Negros. Sander won three straight before being held in Round 4 by Russian Maksim Ermakov.
Beside Severino, the other Filipinos competing are Jasper Rom (2202), Darry Bernardo (2114), Henry Lopez (2107) and Rodolfo Sarmiento (1546). Rom, Bernardo and Lopez each has 3 points and are sharing 23rd to 59th places with 34 others, while Sarmiento has 2 points and is tied for 91st to 150th places. It’s sad that Iloilo’s talented John Franz de Asis did not participate. He could’ave kicked some serious butts here.
