Manila – Five persons were reportedly killed, while 17 others were hurt after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake jolted parts of Mindanao early Wednesday evening.

Mayor Reuel Limbungan said in a television interview on Thursday that a child aged seven years was declared dead on arrival in a hospital in Tulunan, Cotabato, while a man in early 40’s died due to heart attack.

Two people were reportedly killed in a landslide in Magsaysay town in Lanao del Sur based on the report reaching the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

At least 17 people, on the other hand, were injured in Makilala town and were confined at the Makilala Medical Specialist Center, according to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the epicenter of the quake was recorded in Tulunan, Cotabato and 91 aftershocks occurred in several parts of Mindanao.

Renato Solidum, PHIVOLCS head, said in a television interview aftershocks could be strong and capable of causing severe damage.

“Aftershocks can happen. Some can be felt most likely in low intensities. But we cannot remove the possibility of similar intensities that can be felt in the epicentral area,” Solidum said./PN
