74-year-old farmer killed, 2 hurt in Toboso road crash

BACOLOD City A 74-year-old farmer was killed while two others were injured after a multicab collided head-on with a Mitsubishi Fuso truck in Sitio Talawi, Barangay Bug-ang, Toboso, Negros Occidental, on September 4.

Police identified the fatality as alias “John,” a widower and resident of Barangay Minapasok, Calatrava, Negros Occidental, who was driving a green Rusco multicab pickup.

His passengers, alias “Freddy,” 34, and alias “Romy,” 37, both residents of Barangay Marcelo, Calatrava, sustained injuries and were brought to the Alfredo Marañon District Hospital in Sagay City for medical treatment.

The accident occurred at about 6:30 p.m., according to the Toboso Municipal Police Station.

Initial police investigation showed that the multicab was traveling from Sagay City toward Barangay Minapasok, Calatrava, when it allegedly swerved into the opposite lane after its driver fell asleep, based on the account of one of the passengers.

The multicab then collided head-on with a Mitsubishi Fuso truck van driven by alias “Chris,” 39, a resident of Barangay General Luna, Sagay City, who was traveling in the opposite direction.

Police said the truck driver attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision.

Responding personnel brought the multicab driver to the Alfredo Marañon District Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

The truck driver voluntarily surrendered to the Toboso police following the incident as authorities continued their investigation into the crash./PN
