BACOLOD City – To ensure compliance with the increase in the daily minimum wage of P15 to 25, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will conduct “surprise” checks of establishments in Negros Occidental.
The new minimum wage took effect on March 16.
DOLE-Negros Island Region (NIR) director Cyril Ticao said workers have the right to receive just wages corresponding to the kind of jobs they do.
“We are ready to take necessary actions, including the filing of charges and imposing penalties, against violators,” he added.
Wage Order No. 23 approved by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) Region 6 on Dec. 15, 2016 and affirmed by the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) on Feb. 17, 2017 provides a P25 increase in the daily minimum wage for workers in non-agriculture, industrial, and commercial establishments employing more than 10 people – from P298.50 to P323.50 daily.
Firms employing less than 10 workers are directed to give a P15 increase in the daily minimum wage– from P256.50 to P271.50.
In the agriculture sector, plantation and non-plantation workers will also get an increase of P15 – from P266.50 and P256.50 to P281.50 and P271.50, respectively.
Ticao said that in the past, they received complaints on non-compliance by certain employers, and DOLE-Negros Occidental took immediate action.
Although Negros Occidental is already under the Negros Island Region, it is still included in the jurisdiction of the RTWPB in Western Visayas since the new region has not convened its own Wage Board yet. (PNA)
