MANILA – A Senate investigation is being sought to be conducted on the series of “tragic” road accidents involving aging vehicles.
Sen. Leila de Lima filed proposed Senate Resolution 314 to look into the government’s failure to administer “regular, systematic and credible” road safety inspections.
“Major road accidents emanating from negligence in inspections have been a perennial problem in our society, taking hundreds of innocent Filipino lives in the process,” de Lima said.
In her resolution, the detained senator cited three road accidents involving public vehicles, namely the Tanay tourist bus accident which killed 14 students and their driver, the 2014 Florida bus crash that left 14 passengers dead, and the 2013 Atimonan road accident that killed 20 people.
The former Justice secretary asked the Land Transportation Office and the Land Transporting Franchising and Regulatory Board to impose much stricter vehicle inspection for public motor vehicles and enforce penalties to erring licensing officials.
“Mechanical failure is found to be one of the leading causes of road accidents in the Philippines, second to driver error,” de Lima said.
“Before granting franchise or license to operate, it should be imperative to verify the suitability and viability of public transportation businesses to conduct frequent repairs and maintenance of their units.”/PN
