MANILA – Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito said he is against the impeachment of both President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo.
“This will just cause political instability. This is destructive for the economy,” the senator said.
Duterte’s first impeachment case was filed by Magdalo Party-list representative Gary Alejano on the grounds of culpable violation of the Constitution, bribery, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, and other high crimes.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, meanwhile, said he is mulling the impeachment of Robredo for betraying public trust when she sent a video message to United Nations opposing the Duterte administration’s war on drugs.
Ejercito, whose father then president and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada also faced an impeachment trial in 2000, said the processes are “destructive” and “divisive.”
He also urged everyone to “just work together for the better.”
Earlier, Duterte discouraged those who are planning to file an impeachment case against the Vice President.
“Look, you know, we just had an election. Guys, lay off. Let’s stop it,” Duterte said.
For his part, Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III said that Duterte’s statement was a “very good sentiment” since the process of impeachment is a “serious business.”
“You don’t do it lightly for any reason. You do it for grave reasons when you are convinced that there is a good reason to subject to impeachment a high ranking public official,” the senate president said.
Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, meanwhile, urged groups creating a division between Duterte and Robredo to stop pitting them against each other.
“Iyong pagkasabi ni President Duterte na hindi siya involved, naniniwala naman ako doon. The same way na si VP Leni ay hindi involved sa pagpapa-impeach kay President Duterte,” Aquino said.
“They both said na wala silang kinalaman, can’t we just leave it at that? Because in the end, mas gumugulo iyong bayan natin kapag pinag-aaway sila.”/PN
