ROXAS City – One hundred thirty-three people donated during a mass bloodletting that information officers organized in a mall in the city.
Government office heads, students, police officers, soldiers, disaster response volunteers, and mall-goers were among those who joined the 8th Dugtong Buhay.
The activity aimed to ensure sufficient supply of blood at the Philippine Red Cross’ blood bank.
Red Cross’ Capiz chapter registered the donors.
Among them were Colonel Leonardo Pena, commander of the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry “Hunter” Battalion; National Food Authority provincial manager Oliver Cambas; Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Esperedion Pelaez; Senior Inspector Hilbert Gervero, acting chief of Tapaz police station; and Pres. Manuel Roxas Memorial School – SPED principal Richard Lachica.
The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and the Capiz Association of Government Public Information Officers, Inc. (Cagpio) organized the bloodletting on March 30.
In 2011 the PIA and the Cagpio organized the first Dugtong Buhay.
In the absence of a barangay forum, the activity generated only 28 bags of blood for the blood bank Red Cross-Capiz.
In 2013 the same was held twice to generate more donated blood. Donors reached 115, PIA-Capiz information center records showed.
Dugtong Buhay in 2016 facilitated 109 blood donors.
At the time it was one of the top six mass bloodlettings in Capiz in terms of the number of successful blood donors, said Red Cross-Capiz blood donor recruitment officer Ketch Armiza.
Dugtong Buhay has been a consistent Sandugo Awardee of the Red Cross and the Provincial Health. (PIA/PN)
