BORACAY – Beggars and street children on the White Beach are being rounded up.
Authorities are clearing the area of mendicants, especially children, in preparation for the influx of tourists during the Holy Week.
Mendicants are an “eyesore,” according to Senior Police Officer 1 Christopher Mendoza, police-community relations officer of the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center (BTAC).
Involved in the operation are the BTAC’s Women and Children Protection Desk and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office and the Auxiliary Police of the local government of Malay.
As part of Oplan SumVac (summer vacation), the operation will be conducted every night until the Labor Day celebration dubbed “LaBoracay,” Mendoza said.
Mendicants at the White Beach increase in number during the peak season, said the officer.
“Most of them are indigenous people from the mainland (Malay),” Mendoza said.
Mendicants who will get rounded up will be taken to a community center in the island that will serve as their temporary shelter. After an evaluation, they will be subjected to counseling and sent home. (PNA)
