GUIMARAS – For the first time, Manggahan Festival of this island province joined the Aliwan Fiesta this year — and placed second in the battle among the Philippines’ colorful cultural festivals.
Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan of the Cabalagnan National High School in Nueva Valencia town represented the “home of the sweetest mangoes” in the Philippines.
“This is the first time that we joined Aliwan Fiesta, and we placed second,” Liberty Ferrer, acting provincial tourism officer, said as she commended the 350-member delegation for their performance.
Manggahan was only a notch below the Dinagyang Festival of the neighboring Iloilo City, which bagged the Aliwan championship with a number from Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School.
“We are happy to have showcased the best of Guimaras — the mangoes and several tourist attractions of the province, including the San Lorenzo Wind Farm, the Manggahan fest, the beaches, and of course, the hospitality of Guimarasnons,” she said.
P5.7-M AID
Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan won the Kasadyahan competition during the Dinagyang Festival in January.
For its latest victory, Guimaras brought home a P500,000 cash prize.
The group had a total of P5.7 million in cash assistance. Capitol provided P5 million, Ferrer said. This was on top of P500,000 from the Department of Tourism Region 6 and P200,000 from the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc.
“We are also happy for the support of Guimarasnons all over the world who cheered for Manggahan through social media,” she said.
IN TIME FOR FEST
Guimaras is celebrating Manggahan Festival from May 11 to 22.
Its Aliwan Fiesta win makes Guimarasnons here and abroad proud, according to Vice Gov. John Edward Gando. “We can consider it as a gift in time for the province’s celebration of its 25th founding anniversary.”
Gando said the Sangguniang Panlalawigan unanimously approved Gov. Samuel Gumarin’s request for additional budget for the Aliwan participation.
“We are one with the governor in promoting the tourism of Guimaras,” Gando said. “We also want our delegates to be comfortable and well-provided with their needs during their stay in Manila.” (PNA)
