KALIBO, Aklan – The provincial government of Aklan is turning 61 years old today.
Gov. Florencio Miraflores and Vice Gov. Reynaldo Quimpo are leading the Aklan Day, which will showcase the historic, economic and cultural gains of Aklan 61 years since becoming an independent province.
Republic Act 1414, signed by then President Ramon Magsaysay on April 25, 1956, declared April 25 of every year as Aklan Day.
Today is also a special nonworking holiday.
A civic and military parade from Pastrana Park to Godofredo P. Ramos Park at 7:30 a.m. will highlight the celebration.
Prior to that, a thanksgiving mass will be held at 6:30 a.m. at the St. John the Baptist Cathedral.
There will also be a wreath-laying/floral offering and flag-raising ceremony at Godofredo P. Ramos Park at 9 a.m. A commemorative program at the ABL Sports and Cultural Center will follow.
In the evening, capitol will roll out the red carpet for the Outstanding Entrepreneurs of Aklan.
The late congressman Godofredo P. Ramos filed in January 1954 House Bill No. 334 seeking the separation of Aklan from Capiz province.
The bill was passed in the Senate without amendments on April 16, 1956 and signed into law nine days later.
Ramos has since been considered the “Father of Aklan.”
The awarding of winners in the Aklan Piña Fiber Festival, float and booth contests, and the distribution of certificates to participating agencies, organizations and private sectors on April 26 will cap the celebration.
Several activities were already held more than a month before Aklan Day.
The Governor’s Cup Inter-Municipal Basketball Tournament kicked off on March 31 and will run through April 27. The Aklan Provincial Government Employees Inter-Department Sportsfest was from April 4 to 21, and the Provincial Youth Camp, April 18 to 20.
On April 20, there were the Legislative Quiz Bee, Dog Show and SEAFDEC-AQD Aquaculture Clinic, and Rescuelympics from April 20 to 21.
There was the Fisheries Day on April 21 and the Art of Bonsai from April 23 to 25.
The Aklan Piña Fiber Festival, Talibong Festival, Garden Show, and Tsibugan sa Kapitolyo at the Godofredo P. Ramos Park and the Aklan Trade Hall started on April 21 and will run until the 26th.
On April 24 there were the investment opportunity seminar for banana (saba) and cassava; awarding of outstanding real property taxpayers and municipal treasurers; simultaneous deployment of artificial reef projects in Numancia, Nabas, Ibajay, and Batan; and the Aklan Festivals Showcase.
At 6 p.m. on the same day was the Anyag Fashion Show, which featured collections from top local designers, in front of the capitol building. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
