ILOILO City – “We are not above the law.”
Before he was reassigned to a higher post on Friday (May 12), Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, then director of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6), reminded his men to observe the rule of law as he pressed for the dismissal of a policeman arrested for extortion last week.
“He does not deserve to remain in the service. He is a scalawag,” said Gentiles, referring to Police Officer 1 Glenn Garbosa who was caught extorting money from a retired teacher from Barangay San Isidro, Jaro district.
“Police personnel must be worthy of the people’s trust,” said Gentiles.
He hailed the Jaro police station for Garbosa’s arrest in an entrapment around 9:50 p.m. on May 4.
“We are not tolerating scalawags in the police service. Wala kaming biases basta may kasalanan ang pulis natin. I congratulate the Jaro police for a job well done,” said Gentiles.
Garbosa demanded from Rey Fajutrao, 65, money reaching P185,000.
Garbosa, 28, was detailed at the PRO-6’s Regional Personnel Holding Administrative Office. He joined the police service in September 2015.
Tomorrow, an official from the Philippine National Police national headquarters is taking over the PRO-6 directorship. Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag will replace Gentiles.
Gentiles has been promoted to a “two-star” position by Camp Crame. He now heads the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations (DIPO) for Eastern Mindanao, replacing Director Alex Ignacio who retired on Friday.
“I thank the (PNP) Chief (Director General Ronald Dela Rosa) for this opportunity to be promoted,” Gentiles said in the text message.
A turnover of command will be held at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at the multipurpose building of Camp Martin Delgado, headquarters of the Western Visayas police.
Binag was a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1987.
Gentiles was assigned in Western Visayas after Dela Rosa removed the then director, Chief Superintendent Bernardo Diaz last year./PN
