MANILA – The CenterPhil Montessori Silver Knights opened its campaign in the 2017 Iloilo City Invitational Basketball Tournament (Mayors Cup – 1st Conference) with a 94-88 win over Iloilo City National High School on Saturday at the Barangay Katilingban Gym in Molo.
The Silver Knights leaned on veteran players Charles Daniel Sindol, Mark Cleofas and Ronald Silorio Trio to book its first victory in the tournament and tie Sun Yat Sen High School on top of the high school division with a 1-0 win-loss slate.
Still to see action in the category are Hua Siong College of Iloilo, Iloilo National High School, Jalandoni Memorial National High School, Mandurriao National High School and St. Roberts International Academy.
In the college category, the Central Philippine University Golden Lions escaped with an 86-83 victory over St. Paul University in a tightly-contested match.
Over at the 40 and up category, the Iloilo PROS had a strong start to their campaign in the month-long basketball tournament after tallying a 86-72 domination over the MASA squad.
Other teams in the college level are John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University and the University of San Agustin, while the 40 and up have Double B, IFCBA, Iloilo Executive, Iloilo Tuesday Club, and PISAI.
The tournament is part of the part of the city’s grassroots sports program with the theme “Be in Sports, Not on Drugs” and made possible through the efforts of mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and vice mayor Joe Espinosa III with partners in the private sector.
For the collegiate category, the champion will receive P10,000 while second and third placers will get P8,000 and P5,000, respectively. For the college and 40 and up divison, first prize is P5,000, while second and third prize are P3,000 and P2,000, respectively./PN
