MANILA – The Central Philippine University Golden Lions claimed the championship in the 2017 Isuzu 17U Girls Volleyball League, which formally closed on Sunday at the Ateneo de Iloilo Gym.
Led by Finals MVP awardee Chrisann Susbilla, the Golden Lions defeated the Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts in straight-sets, 25-15, 25-16, 25-18, to claim the crown.
This marks the second time this year that the Golden Lions has defeated the Thunderbolts in a championship match after CPU scored a astonishing win in the Plagata Cup on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Iloilo City National High School claimed the third place trophy with a come-from-behind 20-25, 25-21, 25-23 triumph over the St. John Institute (Hua Ming) Bacolod City.
The Thunderbolts reached the championship round after scoring a 25-12, 25-12 win over Iloilo City National High School, while the Golden Lions swept St. John Institue, 25-19, 25-12, in the other series.
In the quarterfinals round, the Golden Lions defeated Ramon Avanceña National High School, 25-15, 25-14, while the Thunderbolts scored a 25-13, 25-23 straight-set win over Sta Barbara.
The Iloilo City National High School swept Iloilo National High School, 25-15, 25-12, while St. John Institute hardly broke a sweat in eliminating La Paz National High School, which suited up with an incomplete lineup.
The week-long volleyball tournament was made possible through the efforts of the Iloilo City Government, Iloilo Isuzu Corp. and Akari Philippines.
Meanwhile, the Adamson Lady Falcons will be conducting tryouts at the Ateneo de Iloilo Gymnasium from 9 a.m, to 12 noon today, May 15.
According to Ilonggo sportsman Ruding Villaruz, the tryout is to be presided by assistant coach Cherry Rose Macatangay with Lady Falcons star Jessica “Jema” Galanza also expected to be in attendance./PN
