MIDDLE age seems to get us all occupied with work that eventually we can’t find time to hit the gym.  But we can always slip some exercises into our busy days.  Here’s how.

Do some stretches.  It relieves tense muscles and improves blood flow in our bodies.  Likewise, it increases our range of motions.  This can be done even at our work desks any time of the day.  It also drives drowsiness away.

Walk to work.  This is a very underrated but effective workout.  If you live less than three kilometres from work, it is a good idea to walk.  With the time spent on preparing the car, looking for parking space and especially with traffic, you just might get to your destination quicker when you walk.  It lowers the blood pressure.  If you really need the car for work, park a block away.  You’ll have your exercise quota for the week.

Biking to work is a very good option but since we lack designated bike lanes and a good number of public transport drivers are reckless and ill-mannered, we do this at our own risk.  Traffic rules are mostly ignored that they had become suggestions.

Have a walking meeting.  You’re doing two things in one.  Schedules do get tight and we try to accommodate unfinished business while we can.  During office breaks, discuss things with an office mate while going for a cup of coffee around the block.  No matter how brief, you’re getting exercise and probably had settled some business.

Take the stairs.  It burns 10 calories per minute.  If your work takes you to the 15th floor, take the elevator up to the 12th and climb the remaining three floors.  Unless you’re really that fit and you want to do it, you don’t have to take it all the way up.  It also burns more calories by taking the stairs one step at a time.

Walk the dog, if you have one.  Yes, get a leash and during day offs and weekends, walk your doggie around the block or if you’re near beaches, you can play and run around with your dog.  Chances are, both you and your dog will be physically active.

There are lots of things to do at home that gives us a good workout.  Grass on the front yard needs trimming, bathroom needs scrubbing, furniture needs vacuuming, floors need polishing, car needs washing.  All these makes us sweat and save us gym fees.

You can’t say anymore that you don’t have time for exercise.  The above mentioned things, although not exactly on the fitness manuals, gives us the daily workouts without the workout./PN
