THE Central Philippine University Golden Lions claimed the 2017 JR Robles U-16 Football Cup with a 1-0 victory over Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High School in the gold medal game over the weekend at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Raphael Joseph Paz scored the go-ahead goal for the Golden Lions when he blow pasts the defense of Barotac Nuevo’s Brian Bedia, the league’s Best Goal Keeper, in the extension period.

Things become chippy early in the match with Barotac Nuevo’s defender Edwin Doctora being given a red card by referee Stephen Bedia for his hit on Golden Lions’ Christian Dequilla in the 36th minute.

Even with Barotac Nuevo down to 10 men, the Golden Lions failed to capitalize due to the former’s tight defense, forcing an extension period where Paz nailed the right foot strike near the box.

Things became even more complicated for the Domingo Subo-mentored Barotac Nuevo as defender Mark Anthony Bedia was sent off the match for reckless tackle on a Golden Lions player.

Aside from the championship trophy, two of Golden Lions’ players were also given individual honors with Tyler Kim Rivera taking the Best Midfield award and Antonio Velario IV named as Best Defender.

Meanwhile, PAG ASA Football Club defeated the Sta. Barbara National High School 3-2 to grab the third place trophy. KJ Guidoriagao scored twice while Jay Sonza nailed the game winner for the PAG-ASA.

Also present during finale day of the tournament were Pablito Araneta, consultant for sports province of Iloilo, Engr. Duffie Botavara, tournament director and Leandro Hautea of Iloilo Football Association.

Filipino boxer Milan Melindo will have another shot at a world title as he faces International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight champion Akira Yaegashi of Japan tonight at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo, Japan.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said the clash between Melindo and Yaegashi has was set following the Filipino boxer’s unanimous decision win over Thai Fahlan Sakkreerin Jr. on November 2016.

This marks the 28-year-old Melindo’s third shot at the world championship after failing in his first two attempts. He has, however, captured numerous international and regional belts.

The Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental-native Melindo lost his first world title attempt against former WBA and WBO unified world champion Juan Francisco Estrada in 2013 at the Cotai Arena, Macau via unanimous decision.

Melindo also faltered in his second world title attempt versus Mexican Javier Mendoza at the latter’s hometown in May 2015. The fight ended in a 6th round stoppage due to head clashes between the two fighters.

Melindo will be parading an impressive 35-2-0 win-loss-draw ring record, including 12 stoppage win. He is also on a three-bout winning streak since losing to Mendoza in 2015.

The 33-year-old Yaegashi, meanwhile, has 25-5-0 win-loss-draw record with 13 knockout wins. He has successfully defended his IBF world title twice since winning it against Mendoza in 2015./PN
