ILOILO City – A depressed inmate at the Iloilo City District Jail (ICDJ) female dormitory tried to kill herself by drinking muriatic acid, a corrosive, strong mineral acid with many industrial uses such as refining metal.

The 30-year-old Sharmaine Morata of Barangay San Isidro, Jaro district was rushed to the Western Visayas Medical Center on Saturday.

According to fellow inmates, Morata drank muriatic acid mixed with water after they finished cleaning the comfort room around 11 a.m.

They used muriatic acid to clean the tiles of the comfort room.

“She had difficulty breathing and complained of chest pain after she drank the muriatic acid. We immediately brought her to the hospital,” said ICDJ warden Imee Lopera.

Early on Saturday, a girlfriend visited Morata. They quarreled, according to Lopera.

This was the second time Morata unsuccessfully tried to kill herself, according to the warden.

Morara was charged with “carnapping” and eight counts of estafa in 2016.  Though her cases were bailable, she did not have the money to secure temporary liberty.

“We have jail guards assigned to her in the hospital to make sure she could not escape,” said Lopera./PN
