KALIBO, Aklan – Police are puzzled by the discovery of a plastic bag containing explosives and ammunitions on Monday inside a cemetery in Kalibo, Aklan.
The plastic bag also had a brown envelope with the words “kung sino man po ang makakita nito pakibigay sa pulis salamat” written on it.
Senior Police Officer 4 Vengie Repedro, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician of Aklan Provincial Public Safety Company, said the recovered items are “potential deadly explosives” and might cause serious damage if detonated.
A construction worker saw the plastic bag around 4:25 p.m. on a tomb at Medalla Milagrosa cemetery (Roman Catholic cemetery) on Osmena Avenue in Barangay Estancia.
Recovered were rifle grenade, 17 rounds of 50 caliber (12.7 mm) ammunitions, 79 rounds of 30 caliber (M1 Garand rifle) ammunitions, 10 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunitions, three pieces of cartridges of 20 mm of anti-aircraft ammunitions, and a piece of propeller tail of unknown mortal shell.
Repedro said the recovered explosives and ammunitions are typically used by the military and police.
The weapons were brought and placed under the custody of EOD at Camp Pastor Martelino in Barangay New Buswang, Kalibo for proper disposition by the Philippine Army.
He, however, dismissed speculations that the abandoned package was part of a planned terroristic attack to sow fear to the residents and the community.
“Bago ang mga na-recover items at posibleng gamitin sa paggawa ng improvised bombs,” he said.
Repedro also urged the people to surrender their “unregistered explosives and firearms” to the police to avoid being charged for loose firearms. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
