ILOILO City – On Monday in line with the country’s 119th Independence Day celebration, the third-class municipality of San Enrique in Iloilo province will attempt to form the largest human Philippine flag ever.
“This attempt would be the first of its kind in the province,” said San Enrique tourism officer, Dr. Jose Patubo.
Close to 7,000 residents signified their intention to participate as of yesterday.
They were mostly elementary, high school and college students, said Patubo.
But those from neighboring towns signified interest, too, to join in the “historic” event, he revealed.
“We mainly want to instill nationalism and patriotism, especially among the young ones,” said Patubo.
Tourism-wise, the attempt could also spark interest in San Enrique, he added.
San Enrique is some 54 kilometers north of Iloilo City. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 33,911 people.
“We also hope to boost economic activities in the town through this event. Bisan simple lang nga candy or bottled water ang mabaligya, it means income for San Enriquenhons,” said Patubo.
San Enrique, with its 28 barangays, is largely agricultural.
Participants to Monday’s event at the San Enrique public plaza (8 a.m.) are asked to wear shirts with either of three dominant colors of the Philippine flag – red, blue, white, and yellow.
“We will try to occupy the entire plaza,” said Patubo.
Free food will be distributed to the participants.
Prior to the human flag formation, there will be an Independence Day parade at 7 a.m.
After the flag formation, a wreath will be offered to the statue of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal at the plaza.
This is not the first time for San Enrique to set a record of some sort. In Aug. 29, 2015 it hosted the Light of Peace event where, despite the threat of bad weather, over 10,000 people lit candles at the vast San Enrique Central School grounds in a united call for world peace.
The event was held in coordination with the Middleway Meditation Institute from Thailand.
The Department of Tourism Region 6 said San Enrique could potentially be the next tourism destination in Iloilo province, citing its diverse natural wonders such as waterfalls, caves and caverns, mushroom farms, and hot springs./PN
