ILOILO City – Mayor Jose “Jojo” De Paula of Janiuay, Iloilo posted P132,000 worth of bail.
De Paula shelled out P120,000 and P12,000 for the illegal possession of firearm and attempted homicide charges, respectively, on June 7, confirmed Senior Inspector Rey Cordero, chief of Maasin town police.
Maasin police station filed the cases against the mayor at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
De Paula was accused of indiscriminately discharging his gun at Villa Teresita Inland Resort in Barangay Tubang, Maasin. People at the resort mobbed the mayor, causing injuries on the latter.
After posting bail, De Paula was released from St. Paul’s Hospital Iloilo where he was treated.
Cordero stressed that they are pursuing the charges.
De Paula was banned from entering a function room where an association of gay people was holding a program around 11 p.m. on June 3.
The mayor walked away and as he was heading toward his vehicle, a burst of gunfire was heard.
The 20-year-old Donald Robles of Barangay Naslo, Maasin was hit.
Tubang barangay officials and tanods seized from De Paula a .9mm pistol.
Cordero earlier said they charged De Paula with violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act because the mayor failed to present pertinent papers to support his ownership of the gun.
As of press time, De Paula has yet to present his firearm license and permit to carry firearms outside of residence, said Cordero./PN
