MANILA – Four suspected Maute group members in police custody were killed during an ambush on Saturday night in Lanao del Norte, a military official said.
Lieutenant Colonel Jo-Ar Herrera, spokesperson for the Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry Division, identified them as Zulkifli Maute, Alan Solaiman, Salah Abbas, and Gar Hadji Solaiman.
Five officers from the Philippine National Police’s Regional Public Safety Battalion and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group were hurt. All of them were brought to the nearest hospital.
Police officers were transporting the four suspected Maute members to Cagayan de Oro City for an inquest proceeding when the attack happened around 7 p.m. at the boundary of Baloi and Pantar towns, Herrera said.
Authorities said the four arrested were supposed to testify against the mother of the brothers allegedly leading the local terrorist organization.
Omenta Romato “Farhana” Maute, mother of Omar and Abdullah, was arrested in Barangay Kormatan, Masiu, Lanao del Sur on Friday evening.
Herrera said they have yet to determine whether or not those who fired at the police convoy were Maute members./PN
